El Blok, Puerto Rico, 2017
Tanner Woodford is a Chicago-based artist. He paints optimistic, typographic, large-scale murals in public and private spaces across Chicago and beyond.
For fourteen years, he led the Design Museum of Chicago as founding executive director. In 2026, he stepped away to lead Iterative Work, an independent design studio focused on narrative-driven design for cultural organizations. He is also the art director of Newcity, the forty-year-old Chicago arts and culture monthly.
He taught Design Thinking for Social Change at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 2014 to 2019 and was appointed to the City of Chicago's Cultural Advisory Council in 2020. He received a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University in 2009 and returned to teach there in 2010.
He is happy to be scrappy, irrepressibly optimistic, and believes design has the capacity to fundamentally improve the human condition.
